Mopar Air Conditioning Parts
Think the AC in Your Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, or RAM is Bad? Here's How to Tell
There's nothing worse than to have the air conditioner in your vehicle go out during the heat of a South Carolina midsummer; the interior starts to bake, followed by the seats, armrests, and steering wheel roasting, and perhaps the worst, the electronics fry.
The thing is, the causes of car AC failure are hard to pin down; they range from the obvious -- compressor, condenser, or evaporator failure, or refrigerant levels -- to the less apparent: things like weakened seals or degraded or broken hoses. Here's a few of the commonest, plus, what to do about them.
Check Refrigerant Levels
If, say, your Chrysler 300 doesn't cool properly, then usually, the cause is low refrigerant; either levels are a problem, or you've got a leak.
You can figure out which by starting your engine, setting the AC to max cool, setting the fans on high, and listening for the click of the compressor clutch. If it seems like the system's working too fast, the refrigerant's likely low. If it's not due to be serviced, a leak's likely.
Check all the seals -- the fittings, plus the compressor hose manifolds, the hoses themselves (right at the fittings), and the front seal and O-rings (these seal the compressor's pressure switches). Also, check the Schrader valves, where condensation drains out the evaporator, and the condenser (for pinholes). Replace whatever you need to.
Inspect the AC Compressor
If the interior of, say, your Dodge Charger is warmer than usual, then you likely have compressor problems. Weird noises, a stuck clutch -- these basically make it official. You can tell if you've got a bad clutch by connecting a voltmeter; if there's no voltage, then the clutch has likely failed. Other issues could be a blown fuse, low refrigerant pressure, or a faulty cycling switch. Replace whatever isn't working.
Take a Look at the AC Condenser
With an SUV like, say, Jeep Cherokee, you might also run into things like frost accumulation, a flashing AC button, a lit HVAC warning light, and discharge pressure issues. These almost always mean trouble with the condenser.
You can tell whether you've got it by starting the engine, maxing out the AC, putting the fans on high, and checking the air coming through the vents. If it's not cool, the condenser's likely to blame. (Of course, if no air is moving at all, the blower motor may be bad.) Check the cooling fans on the condenser and radiator and make sure they're working; look for any dirt or debris clogging airflow through the condenser -- specifically, where the condenser vents to the outside. Finally, check the cabin air filter for clogs. Again, replace any problematic parts.
